Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

IsiZulu is the largest language in the Republic of South Africa in terms of the number of speakers. It plays a major role in public life, is increasingly taught at universities, has a rich literature and is one of the African languages with a remarkable presence on the Internet.

The course provides a basic understanding of the structures of the language and the ability to put them into practice. By the end of the course, students will be able to read and write in isiZulu and to deal with standard communicative situations. This opens up direct access to large sections of South African society and makes it possible to actively explore the country and conduct research into various social phenomena.

After a general introduction, the students accompany a fictitious South African family in a variety of life situations and thus learn the grammar and vocabulary of modern urban isiZulu step by step. A fresh look at the specific structures of the language opens up a deeper understanding of the complexities of modern South Africa. Important aspects such as language change and multilingualism in a multi-ethnic country are central to the content of the course.

Students will activate the information provided in the presentation through exercises both in and out of class. They will work with materials provided by the teacher, which will enable them to engage with the course content as intensively as possible outside of class. In addition to digital grammar exercises, digitally prepared dialogues and texts are used to consolidate what has already been learned and to learn new things. The course is designed as an integrated event in which teachers and learners work together interactively on new content.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance and active participation are prerequisites for the successful completion of the course.
A final test is given at the end of the semester.

Participation, preparation: 50%
