Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

What made an ancient Mesopotamian laugh? In this seminar, we will read a selection of texts that are meant to be humorous or satirical, and we will discuss and reflect on ways in which humor was communicated and to what extent humor is culturally and temporally dependent.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students are expected to prepare translations and commentaries for the primary texts, read assigned secondary literature every week, and participate in each class session. 2 unexcused absences are permitted. All students must give an oral presentation (15-20 minutes) on a relevant topic of their choosing. For students completing their BA within this course and for MA students, a thesis or seminar paper is required. Details are provided in the course syllabus.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In order to receive a passing grade for this course, students are expected to: participate actively in primary text reading and discussions; give an oral presentation on a given topic; write a final paper (BA thesis and MA only). Participation is mandatory and students are allowed three absences. All requirements must be completed in accordance with best scientific practices and the instructor’s directions.

Examination topics

Active participation in class and short presentations.
