Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The lecture series provides an overview of important approaches to general, applied and historical linguistics that are significant for the study of the Arabic language with its diversity of varieties. Both theories and methods are taught that enable to analyse the Arabic language at different linguistic levels. The focus is primarily on modern linguistic approaches. Firstly, the general linguistic attention of the lecture series is (a) on phonetic and phonological issues (including questions of historical phonology and the discussion of universals), (b) on theories and methods of the formal semantic analysis of Arabic, (c) on the syntactic analysis of Arabic, and (d) on methods of experimental linguistics. Secondly, it introduces (e) the theoretical and methodological approach of comparative historical analysis. Thirdly, several lecture units are devoted to applied linguistics. These deal (f) with sociolinguistic and, in particular, ethnographic approaches, (g) with the psycholinguistic approach to language perception and language evaluation, (h) with the pragmatic and, in particular, speech act theoretical analysis of linguistic action, (i) with the methodological possibilities and challenges of digital corpus linguistic documentation of spoken varieties of Arabic, and (j) with important questions of multilingualism. The following teachers will participate in the lecture series: Daniel Büring, Ana Iriarte Díez, Hannes A. Fellner, Peter Hallman, Jonas Hassemer, Iva Kovač, Karlheinz Mörth, Markus Pöchtrager, Stephan Prochazka, Martin Reisigl, Susanne Reiterer, Jürgen Spitzmüller, Kriszta Eszter Szendröi, Eva Vetter.
