Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Reading of classical Arabic-Islamic texts with a focus on Sufi reflections; Introduction to scholarly tools for Islamic studies and Arab philology (Qur'an translations, grammar books, dictionaries etc.); selected topics (approaches to the Qur'an; structure of classical Arab names, eulogies etc.)

Assessment and permitted materials

Presence (3 times of absence will be tolerated), active participation (home exercises, translating, preparing of literature), midterm essay, final paper (due September, 15th 2021)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To get a positive grade, active participation and the writing of the final paper in time and according to the scientific rules are expected. The paper should be discussed against the background of scientific literature.
Criteria for grading: Participation/exercises during the semester 40%, Essay 10%, Paper 50%

Examination topics

No test anticipated. (grading see above)
