Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The excursion will be organised in cooperation with Prof. Christophe Erismann/Byzantine Studies.
At the places planned for the visit, cultural and literary-historical as well as cultural-geographical topics will be in the foreground, whereby special attention will be paid to the topics of continuity and transformation - from Constantinople to Istanbul, from the capital of the Ottoman Empire to the metropolis of the Republic of Turkey. The programme will be supplemented and underpinned by presentations by the students and explanations by the accompanying teachers as well as by specialist colleagues on site, who will give us an understanding of individual aspects. Visits to the Chancellery Archives in Kağıthane, which house around 100-150 million documents, and the manuscript collection of the Süleymaniye Library are also planned, both institutions that play a central role in academic source work.
