Aims, contents and method of the course

This course (Übung) is to be completed concurrently with the lecture class 141136 VO Introduction to Sumerian (2025S)!

Through in-class and at-home exercises, assignments, and discussion, this course helps students to consolidate the knowledge of Sumerian grammar and early cuneiform writing they gain in the accompanying lecture course 141136 VO Introduction to Sumerian (2025S).

The course's aim is for students to be able to read, analyze, and translate simple Sumerian texts (in transliteration) by the end of the semester. Students will also be able to understand the logic behind the translations of more difficult Sumerian texts. Students will be able to find and use the main reference materials (grammars, sign lists, etc.) related to Sumerian. Finally, students should be able to read, transliterate, transcribe, and translate some easy cuneiform texts.

Assessment and permitted materials

This course will be taught in English or German, depending on the needs of the students. Either language can be used for questions or when completing assignments.

Students will be expected to actively participate by doing the following:
*contributing to class discussion (asking questions, answering questions, etc.)
*completing in-class assignments to practice the grammar
*preparing the weekly at-home assignments and being prepared to discuss them in class
1) theory questions based on readings
2) translation and grammar exercises
*1 short presentation (or similar activity) on 2 translated Sumerian texts (details will be discussed in class)
*writing your own Sumerian Bauinschrift (details will be discussed in class)
*1 (potential) vocabulary quiz

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

This is course (Übung) has continuous assessment (Prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung, pi LV), which means attendance is compulsory. You are allowed 3 absences. Not being prepared for class (completing homework) will count as an absence.

To receive a positive grade, students must:
* actively participate in class discussion & activities,
* complete all assignments, and
* in particular, thoroughly complete the assigned translation exercises before each class.
