Aims, contents and method of the course

Goals: Acquisition of basic concepts of syntax and their application to African languages.

Contents: This course offers an overview of selected syntactic features and structures of African languages. Among other things, the following areas will be discussed:
• Parts of speech (e.g., ideophones, adjectives in African languages)
• Cases in African languages (e.g., "marked-nominative systems")
• Serial verb constructions
• Tense Aspect Mode (TAM) in African languages
• Strategies of negation
• Focus constructions in African languages
• Interrogative sentences in African languages
• Properties of complex sentence constructions (e.g., coordination, relative clauses, complement clauses)

Methods: Overview lecture with examples from different African languages.

Assessment and permitted materials

Performance assessment: Written exam at the end of the semester.

Minimum requirements: Participation in the written exam.

Assessment scale: 100% written exam.
