Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is an introduction to Ge'ez, i.e. Old Ethiopic. The lessons treat the grammar and basic vocabulary. Once we begin to read inscriptions, we will discuss cultural matters as well.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation and timely completion of all homework are essential for a good grade.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

1 91-100 (very good)
2 78-90 (good)
3 66-77 (satisfactory)
4 53-65 (enough)
5 0-52 (not enough)
Students who receive 5 as a grade do not pass the course.

Examination topics

The final exam consists of a Ge'ez text for you to translate.

Reading list

The basic grammar for our course is Stephan Prochazka's "Altäthiopische Studiengrammatik". The first volume is the Grammar and the second is a chrestomathy. I will upload PDFs of all materials from the book on Moodle. Supplementary materials will similarly be posted on Moodle.
