Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Environmental history, as a relatively new phenomenon in the study of Eurasia, offers a fresh perspective to the researchers of this geographically, ecologically, and culturally diverse region. Although the economic, fiscal, agricultural, and social histories of Central Asia, Iran, and the Ottoman Empire/Turkey have been extensively researched over the past decades, environmental history has only recently appeared on the radar of historians of these regions.

The lecture series "Nature, Environment and Society in Eurasia" will be devoted to the environmental history of Eurasia, the interrelationship between societies and nature, including the discussion of what nature meant to the respective communities, the question of shortage of resources as well as the human impact on ecosystems and landscapes through time.
