Aims, contents and method of the course
This course is the first of a two- (potentially three-) part introduction to Syriac. In it, students will learn the basics of Syriac grammar and lexicon. As the semester progresses, authentic texts will be introduced as reading exercises.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Grading will be based on in-class participation and performance on the final exam. The final exam will account for 50% of the grade for the course.The grading system is as follows:
5 (0-52): not enough
4 (53-65): enough
3 (66-77): satisfactory
2 (78-90): good
1 (91-100): very good

Examination topics
At the end of the semester we will have our final exam. This exam will consist of an excerpt from an authentic Syriac text, which students will have to translate. Translations can be in English or German. Students will have a full week in which to complete the exam.
Reading list
Our textbook for this semester is "Paradigms and Exercises in Syriac Grammar" by Theodore H. Robinson. PDFs of the chapters of this textbook will be uploaded to Moodle over the course of the semester, so there is no need to purchase the book.
