Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
In this course, we will focus on the essential practical aspects of Arabic dialectology (preparation and implementation of fieldwork, voice recordings, documentation of metadata, transcription, glossing and data analysis). We will also learn to use the most important tools for editing, transcribing and glossing voice recordings (especially Praat, ELAN, FLEx). Students will have a chance to conduct their own small field research in Vienna, or from their own MA projects, and then work with their own material.
Assessment and permitted materials
Among the various assignments, students will have to hand a text transcribed, glossed and translated in ELAN (from a 5-minute self-made voice recording) participate in class (discussion contributions, preparation of texts, etc.) and give a short presentation about the preparation and conceptualization of their own field research that they will develop in the final paper. Reading of accompanying secondary literature is considered part of the weekly participation.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
50 points: Submission of an academic paper by 10.8.2023
30 points: Active participation in class by contributing to the discussions of readings and preparing/delivering 10 small tasks of 3 points each (e.g., answering questions about secondary literature, designing a questionnaire, etc. )
20 points: Short presentation on a "case study" (i.e., the planned study/field research) after approximately the first half of the seminar (9.05.2023).Positive evaluation with more than 50% of the points:
Grade key: 100 - 91 = Very Good; 79 - 90 = Good; 65 - 78 = Satisfactory; 51 - 64 = Sufficient; < 50= Not Sufficient.
