Aims, contents and method of the course

From the Danish „Mohammed cartoons”, to the speech of Pope Benedict XVI in Regensburg and the novel Azazeel by Muslim Egyptian author Youssef Ziedan, polemics seemingly opposing freedom of speech and freedom of religion have increased. The controversies appear to have been fuelled by the rise of the internet.
In this course we will dwell into and contextualise several case-studies. Alongside the famous cases seemingly opposing the West to the Islamic world, we will also discuss controversies reflecting Arab and Islamic debates.

Goals: gaining knowledge about the imaginaries, interests and contextual factors played out during these controversies. Strengthening analytical skills.

Methodes: analysis of texts and discussions.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation (30%), summary of three texts available on moodle. Of the three summaries, the two best will get a grade (35% + 35%).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirement for successful completion of the course is active participation and physical presence (2 absences will be tolerated), as well as the completion of a final paper (including possible reflection) in due time, in accordance with the demands of the lecturer and the guidelines of good scientific practice. Grading will be based on active participation (30%), three summaries (70%)
