Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Ibn Sīnā's "Healing" or "Cure" is a philosophical summa, i.e. a comprehensive overview of philosophy whose structure follows the oeuvre of the antique philosopher Aristotle. In "The Healing" different philosophical and scientific questions are discussed, such as the cosmos, atomism, God, theodicy, politics etc. Ibn Sīnā also addresses controversies of his time, such as the ones with the representatives of Kalām. We will read key passages from "The Healing" in the Arabic original and discuss their philosophical notions and context. We will also consider the reception of this Avicennian writing.
