    Information

    Aims, contents and method of the course

    Somali is an East Cushitic language and is spoken in the Horn of Africa (Somalia, Somaliland, Djibouti, north-east Kenya, eastern Ethiopia). There is also a significant Somali diaspora in the west. The number of speakers is estimated at around 24 million.
    Course objectives: elementary language use at A1 level (reading and understanding simple sentences; talking about yourself and specific needs; understanding and using basic grammar)
    Methods: In addition to a short introduction to the relevant grammar, the course is very interactive, with lots of speaking, listening, reading and writing exercises.

    Assessment and permitted materials

    At the end of the semster there is a take home exam, which can be elaborated with the support of dictionaries and further material which will be provided in class.

    Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

    The submission of the take home exam is the minimum requirement for passing this course. Attendance is not compulsory. In sum, 30 points may be obtained: - 15,25 points: 5, 15,5 – 19 points: 4, 19,25 – 22,75 points: 3, 23 – 26,5 points: 2, 26,75 – 30 points: 1

    The examination material consists of all the handouts that are posted on Moodle every week.
