    Information

    Aims, contents and method of the course

    Amharic is the official language of Ethiopia and is spoken by more than 20 million people. Amharic uses a syllabic script; each consonant is realised in seven different forms depending on the vowel attached.
    In addition to a brief introduction to the relevant grammar, the course is very interactive, with lots of speaking, listening, reading and writing exercises..
    Objective: elementary language use at A1 level (read and understand simple sentences; talk about tyourself and specific needs; understand and use basic grammar)

    Assessment and permitted materials

    At the end of the semster there is a take home exam, which can be elaborated with the support of dictionaries and further material which will be provided in class.

    Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

    The submission of the take home exam is the minimum requirement for passing this course. Attendance is not compulsory.
    A total of 30 points can be achieved: -- 15.25 points: Not sufficient, 15.5 - 19 points: Satisfactory, 19.25 - 22.75: Satisfactory, 23 - 26.5: Good, 26.75 - 30 Very good

    Examination topics

    Lessons 1-9 from the textbook Sälam 1 are the examination material. This can be ordered from Buske-Verlag (48,- €) or borrowed from the library. The compulsory lessons can also be found on moodle from the beginning of the semester.
