Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Seminary on Arabic historical works from the Mamluk period in Egypt and Syria. Overview over the most important Arabic workss on this subject, reading of texts with translation and interpretation, accompagnied by presentations on relevant items, term paper.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular active cooperation and contributions, continous preparation. Term paper concerning particular Arab historians of the Mamluk period.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Regular participation (absence at most three times), regular active cooperation and contributions, presentations, term paper. Relation of presentation / term paper : contributions 10 : 90. If necessary, with regard to Covid19, the lessons in form of personal presence might be replaced through other possibilities of teaching.

Examination topics

Apart from reading, translation and interpretation of specific Arabic passages: term paper.

Reading list

Texts: especially: Ibn Iyas: Bada'i` az-zuhur, Ibn Taghribirdi: an-Nujum az-zahira, al-Qalqashandi: Subh al-a`sha.
Secondary literature on the genre will be dealt with during the sessions.
