Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar "Technology, Culture, and Society in Turkey" focuses on interrelations between technology, culture, and society in the Republic of Turkey from 1923 to 2023 and introduces students to current academic debates on the cultural relevance of technology.

In the seminar "Technology, Culture, and Society in Turkey", central works and research debates will be presented and discussed, as well as basic methods and sources on the topic will be discussed and classified.

The contents of the course will be conveyed through reading, discussions in individual and group work, and presentations (papers).

Assessment and permitted materials

The seminar “Technology, Culture, and Society in Turkey” is a course with immanent examination character (pi-LV). Students are asked to work independently on a topic for the seminar paper and to present the results obtained by means of papers and record them in the form of a seminar paper.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirement:

Regular attendance, active participation and collaboration are the prerequisites for a positive assessment of the course.

Attendance:

Attendance is compulsory. In the first session, students should also show their student ID, as they are generally obliged to identify themselves to the teacher if requested. Registered students who do not show up for the first course session without an excuse will be deregistered. Vacant places will be given to students on the waiting list. The maximum number of unexcused absences is three. For further absences, a certificate or attestation must be presented (e.g. for absence due to illness from a doctor, therapist or similar). Students who do not fulfil the attendance requirement (and have not properly signed out) will automatically be assessed negatively.

Assessment criteria:

Attendance and participation: 20% (=20 points).

Students should prepare thoroughly for each lesson and participate actively in the discussions. Attendance in class alone without participation is not sufficient to receive a good mark for participation in the seminar.

Exposé: 20% (=20 points)

Submission: 14 December 2023

Presentation: 20% (=20 points)

Seminar paper: 40% (=40 points)

Presentation: January 2024
Seminar paper submission: 15 February 2024

Students should choose a topic for the final project or seminar paper. The seminar paper (15-20 text pages, incl. title page, table of contents, bibliography, appendices, etc.) should preferably deal with a topic related to the topics covered in the seminar. By 10 November, students should consult with the course instructor about their topic. On 14 December, students should submit a two-page prospectus with a bibliography.

Composition of the grade:

60 points are required for a positive assessment of the course.

Students who do not fulfil the preparation of a synopsis and the presentation of the paper will be given negative marks

1 (very good) 100-90 points
2 (good) 89-81 points
3 (satisfactory) 80-71 points
4 (sufficient) 70-60 points
5 (insufficient) 59-9 points
