Aims, contents and method of the course

Die Tradition (paramparā) des Josmanī-Ordens ist Teil der Bhakti-Bewegung und folgt dem Weg der nirguṇa Sant. Diese Tradition hat sich den Quellen nach von Garhwal über Westnepal nach Osten verbreitet, über Zentral- und Ostnepal bis Sikkim, aber auch weiter bis nach Assam und anderen Regionen des nordöstlichen Indien. Anfangs war es eine ausschließlich brahmanische Tradition, doch hat sie sich vor allem im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts zunehmend geöffnet und fand zahlreiche Anhänger bei den ethnischen Gruppen, wie Magar, Gurung und Rai in Nepal.

Eine Zeitlang war der Orden im Königreich Nepal in hohem Ansehen, sogar in der königlichen Familie gab es Anhänger (namentlich Rana Bahadur Shah). Doch nach einem Mordanschlag auf Jang Bahadur Rana durch Lakhan Thapa, der ein Josmanī gewesen sein soll, fielen sie bei den herrschenden Rana in Ungnade und wurden zunehmend als aufrührerische Staatsfeinde angesehen und verfolgt oder vertrieben.

In dieser Übung soll die Tradition der Josmani anhand der Lektüre von historischen und literarischen Texten erschlossen werden. Dabei wird hauptsächlich das Standardwerk von Janaklal Sharma als Quelle verwendet. Der Fokus liegt hierbei vor allem auf den
hagiographischen Lebensgeschichten der wichtigsten Vertreter, insbesondere Sasidhar und Gyandil Das. Des weiteren werden verschiedene poetische Texte, Gesänge der Josmanī zu lesen sein, wie z.B. das Udaya Laharī.

Gute Nepali-Kenntnisse sind Voraussetzung für eine erfolgreiche Teilnahme.

Assessment and permitted materials

Die Beurteilung erfolgt auf der Basis von regelmäßiger Teilnahme, Vorbereitung (durch Lektüre und Übersetzungen), aktiver Mitarbeit (Kurzreferate, Diskussion) und einer Hausarbeit. Lehrmaterial wird z.T. auf Moodle bereitgestellt.
