Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The lecture deals with the basics of Tibetan medicine, the "science of healing" (gso ba rig pa). The standard work of this medical system, the Four Tantras or Four Treatises (rGyud bzhi), is traditionally attributed to gYu-thog Yon-tan mgon-po (12th century). Until today, the training of Tibetan doctors is based on this work. First, the history of Tibetan medicine will be presented in the lecture. After a general introduction to the theory and practice as well as the structure of the Four Treatises, the gynecological section will be discussed in more detail. It will be used as an example of how the causes, conditions, classification, symptoms and therapeutic methods of diseases are described in Tibetan medical literature. To what extent is the gynecological section thereby subject to a misogynistic view? Selected text passages will be read in translation and discussed in their relation to the practice of Tibetan doctors today, especially in exile in India and Nepal. The aim is to gain insight into the Tibetan perception of diseases, especially those of women, and to understand basic concepts of Tibetan medicine.
