Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course aims at shedding light on the concept of dharma, a concept critical to the understanding of Indian philosophies and religions. By taking into consideration the textual sources in which the idea is examined, we will use the notion as a tool to trace the major developments of Indian cultural and philosophical history. The following is a provisional program of the course:

1. Dharman and dharma in the Veda.
2. The evolution of the concept of dharma in the Upaniṣads and in the late Vedic period.
3. The Buddha's dharma.
4. Treatises on dharma (Dharmaśāstra).
5. Dharma in Jainism
6. Dharma in early Buddhist philosophy.
7. An enquiry into Dharma: the case of Mīmāṃsā
8. Dharma in the Mahābhārata
9. The Bhagavadgītā: dharmas in conflict
