Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

By the end of the lecture course, the students will have acquired a thorough overview over the history of South Asien in the years 1400-1800 CE. They will understand the cultural legacy of this time and its meaning today: How was South Asia when the British came? How did it become like that? Why is there so much Persian in Hindi? (And in most other South Asian languages too.) Why do 30 % of all Muslims live in South Asia? Why is that a source of conflicts? Why can South Asia not be understood without the Mughal Empire? Etc.

Assessment and permitted materials

The students need to know 75 % of the material as detailed in the power point presentations. The material is in German. Up to now, all students who have attended the lectures have scored well while those who tried to learn the material on their own did not.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

75 % of the material should be mastered to obtain a positive assessment. The exam will NOT be a single or multiple choice test!

Examination topics

The material of the lectures has been detailed above.

Reading list

The exam will be based on the power point presentations of the lecture (in German). They will be uploaded on Moodle after each session. Additional literature will be mentioned but not expected.
