Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The Hindi Media and Indian General Election 2024 course focuses on one of the world's most important democratic events - the Indian general election - and examines the crucial role of the media, particularly the Hindi media, in this process.

Throughout the course, we will explore how the Hindi media influences political opinion, shapes election narratives and engages voters across India's Hindi-speaking regions. From television channels to newspapers, digital platforms and social media, Hindi media has emerged as a key force in political communication. We will analyse how this media is used to convey messages. You will also have the opportunity to critically examine media coverage and analyse emerging trends as the 2024 elections unfold.

This course encourages active participation, keeping up to date with current events and sharing your insights in discussions. We will use a variety of materials in class, including audio-visual content, written texts, cartoons, photos, and sketches.

The class meetings are divided into close reading, discussion and formal lecturing. It is absolutely necessary that all students engage with the weekly reading in order to participate in the class discussions. Regular participation and a sound knowledge of Hindi are strictly demanded for the course.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students will be required to prepare an oral presentation on a topic of their choice related to the Indian elections and submit an essay in Hindi by the end of the semester. Additionally, they are expected to submit homework regularly throughout the course.
