Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
Mandatory attendance; active participation, regular reading and written preparation of texts for group discussions: 30% of the grade
A presentation (related to the BA thesis) with a handout: 20% of the final grade
Bachelor’s thesis: 50% of the final grade
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Minimum Requirements:
Proficiency in a modern South Asian language.
Completion of the BA seminar with a BA thesis, including both a philological and a cultural studies component.
Regular and active participation in all seminar sessions.
Examination topics
A selection of reference books and articles relevant to the preparation of the Bachelor's thesis
Reading and rereading of selected texts for analysis, ensuring a deeper understanding of themes, narratives, and contextual significance.

To research and analyse narratives—including stories, essays, advertisements (written and visual), and pamphlets—from South Asia that focus on women, their lives, societal roles, and representations of the female body.
To critically examine the portrayal of women in these sources, considering gender roles, identity, and socio-cultural influences.
To deepen the understanding of the diversity of expression in South Asian literary and cultural contexts.
To develop interdisciplinary perspectives by integrating critical textual analysis with cultural studies approaches.Methods:
Textual Analysis: Students will explore various representations of femininity in source texts, analysing them within their respective cultural contexts.
Interdisciplinary Discussion: Engaging with multiple perspectives and approaches, particularly from literary and cultural studies, South Asian studies, and gender studies.Attention: Courses 142246-1 and 142248-1 can only be completed together.
