Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The Bachelor seminar provides an in-depth exploration of the portrayal of women in modern and contemporary South Asian literature, focusing on their relationship with and representation through food. By integrating various forms of cultural expression and gender perspectives, the course examines how these themes are conveyed across different narratives.

Aimed at students with an interest in literary and cultural studies, the seminar encourages critical analysis and reflection on the connection of femininity and food. Through the study of literature, advertisements, articles, and other sources, students will engage with the cultural, social, and historical contexts that shape these representations.

Objectives:
To research and analyse narratives—including stories, essays, advertisements (written and visual), and pamphlets—from South Asia that focus on women, their lives, societal roles, and representations of the female body.
To critically examine the portrayal of women in these sources, considering gender roles, identity, and socio-cultural influences.
To deepen the understanding of the diversity of expression in South Asian literary and cultural contexts.
To develop interdisciplinary perspectives by integrating critical textual analysis with cultural studies approaches.

Methods:
Textual Analysis: Students will explore various representations of femininity in source texts, analysing them within their respective cultural contexts.
Interdisciplinary Discussion: Engaging with multiple perspectives and approaches, particularly from literary and cultural studies, South Asian studies, and gender studies.

Attention: Courses 142246-1 and 142248-1 can only be completed together.
