Aims, contents and method of the course

The Penguin Dictionary of Religions (1984: 270): „Religion. Whatever it is that embraces or is embraced … no single or simple definition will suffice … (1) A religion: one of a set of recognizable systems of belief and practice having a family resemblance. … ‘the religion of’ (a people or cultural area). (2) The more abstract term, ‘religion’, may denote: (a) the class of all religions; (b) the supposed common essence of all genuinely religious phenomena; (c) that ideal of which all actual religions are taken to be imperfect manifestations; 8d) human religiousness, expressed not only in systems and traditions (explicit religion) but also in ways of life where it is hidden (implicit). … The Sciences of Religion often employ a functional definition … For example, J.M. Yinger defined religion as ‘a system of beliefs and practices by means of which a group of people struggles with the ultimate problems of human life’.”
Diese Vorlesung führt in die westafrikanische Religions- und Kulturgeschichte ein. Der westliche Sahel bildet ein großflächiges Areal, auf dem sich über zwei Millennia imposante politische Staaten- und Reichsgeschichte abgespielt haben (etwa die alten Reiche Ghana, Mali und Songhay; die Bambara- und Mossi-Staaten, die Dschihadstaaten des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts; die postkolonialen Nationalstaaten). Da keine Politik ohne „the symbology of power“ (Geertz) auskommt, keine Gesellschaft ohne „Religion“, und kein Mensch ohne „Geist“ (also Spiritualität bzw. Religiosität) und weil der Westsudan eine besonders traditionsreiche Interaktionssphäre darstellt (auch in religiöser Hinsicht), liegt der Fokus auf dieser Region.
