Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Please note: depending on language command among students the course will take place in either German or English, or a mix of both languages. We will sort this out at the beginning of the semester.

The introduction and development of radio in African countries was immediately tied to the European/ colonial "war effort", the late colonial state's desire to reach out, with rules and laws, to entire populations and the post-colonial state's desire to control opinion so as to effect nation-building. At the same time, audiences, once radio came within their reach, learnt to handle such "intentions" and to put radio, at least partly, to their own use. Radio also offered new avenues for professional and creative careers among members of the African elite.
This course will offer opportunities to delve into various national and thematic contexts of "being on air". It invites participants to discuss such context and draw connections between individual case studies - an important step towards thinking radio and being on air conceptually and from involved participants' points of view.
