Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Language skills alone are often not enough in a foreign environment to fully understand actors from other cultures, because symbols of all kinds, idioms, somatisms, ..., can be meaningful as well as incomprehensible at the same time.
The course will deal with official as well as informal texts, with speeches of personalities as well as with song lyrics, analyzing the language of politics, everyday language, the reason and the emergence of secret languages, and much more.
Different points of view will be taken and understood, the interactive lecture will be enriched with group work and discussions.

Assessment and permitted materials

A final exam will be given at the end of the semester to test knowledge of each topic block, but participation during the lessons will also be assessed or participation in the content forums in Moodle.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

No specific qualifications are required for a participation in the course. However, active participation during the semester is desired.

Examination topics

The content that will be discussed during the semester along with the related literature.

Reading list

Literature (print works and audiovisuals) will be announced during the semester in the accompanying Moodle course.
