Aims, contents and method of the course

Der vollständige Titel dieser VO lautet: Zum westafrikanischen Film des 20. Jahrhunderts: Gesellschaftskritik und historische Spiegelungen à la Ousmane Sembène & Co.

In dieser Vorlesung steht daher das gesellschaftskritische, kulturell anspruchsvolle westafrikanische Kino auf dem Programm, das sich ab Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts entwickelte und (oft) nicht nur einfach unterhalten wollte, sondern sich (oft) ausdrücklich als sozial relevantes Bildungsmedium verstand. Die Aufbereitung historischer Stoffe bildete neben den Schilderungen zeitgenössischer Situationen in den pulsierenden Städten ebenso Teil des westafrikanischen Films dieser Jahre wie das Bemühen einzelner Filmemacher, das ländliche Leben in Westafrika durch die Kameralinse einzufangen bzw. es spielerisch zu inszensieren.
Nach einer allgemeinen Einführung in die afrikanische, besonders westafrikanische Filmgeschichte behandle ich ausgesuchte Stoffe und Filmemacher. Eine doppelbödige Konzentration erfolgt einmal auf den Spuren des französischen Ethnologen Jean Rouch (1917-2004), der nicht nur einer der Pioniere des ethnographischen Films und des Cinema Verité war, sondern auch großen und bleibenden Einfluss auf FilmemacherInnen besonders in Niger gehabt hat; sodann in Gestalt von Ousmane Sembéne (1923-2007), einem der Väter des afrikanischen Spielfilms, der über vier Jahrzehnte lang ein vielschichtiges kinematographisches Werk schuf, das aufschlussreiche Darstellungen westafrikanischer Geschichte enthält.
