Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
African studies offer an immense variety of research themes and questions. In this seminar, we will introduce students with our top 10 of current themes and concepts in African studies: this will be the opportunity for them to reflect on what a „research field“ is and how they can develop their own research interests. The selected concepts will cover representations of the world (African religion & feminist philosophy), understanding of time, age and generation; reflection of space (with a focus on violence and detention). We will introduce Urban Studies as well as studies about racism in historical perspective. We will explore alternative ways of reading, listening to, writing about or drawing African studies/history (using comics, newspapers or radio). Last but not least, we will discuss how to disseminate academic knowledge to a non-academic, broader audience, introducing the fields of memory and museum studies as well as public history.Seminars will be held in German and English, and, if conform to the Covid-19 rules established by the University of Vienna, will be held in presence.
