Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

African languages provide a particularly rich empirical domain for the development of syntactic theories. This course aims at giving the student a comprehensive introduction to the varied grammar analyses of African languages. Through the course, students will be introduced to the basic concepts and problems that have shaped the field of syntax and will learn the mechanics of how to capture these issues and deepen their understanding of the nature of human language.

Methods: Lectures, research project, student presentations, group discussions

Assessment and permitted materials

Course assessment will be in the form of a term paper to be submitted electronically by email before July 15th, 2020.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Effective academic uses of English are required. The term paper will be evaluated on its technical merit and depth, description of the literature, originality and presentation.

DEADLINE: July 15th 2020
FORMAT OF SUBMISSION: Term papers should be submitted electronically by email to the instructor in PDF format.

Examination topics

Topics for term paper may draw on materials covered in the lecture and assigned readings.
