Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course mechanisms within African societies will be shown which allow to recognize and/or reduce conflict potential:
On the basis of certain rituals, the influence of art and culture (film, music and theater); griots and other mediators, different regulatives in social coexistence will be reviewed.
In addition, concrete conflicts will be discussed in terms of their linguistic stylistic devices. The case studies in 2023 will focus on the countries Mali, Burkina Faso and Nigeria.

The course will be structured through interactive lectures, discussions and small group work and is intended to
promote understanding between cultures, learn to grasp different viewpoints and perspectives, and make foreign thinking constructs comprehensible.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation during the semester and a final exam at the end of the semester will be used for grading (BA-students).
MA students are also required to submit a short written elaboration of a (self-selected) topic.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

There are no specifics required. Active participation during the semester is desired.

Examination topics

In June, the semester contents will be examined in a written exam.
