Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the course is a deeper understanding of elementary concepts and approaches in the theory and criticism of literatures of Africa and the Diaspora and their application in the discussion and analysis of works of literature. To this end, concepts and debates in the area of literary studies are systematically elaborated: Definitions of literary studies, literary history, and literary theory in general; presentation of a range of the models for textual analysis; Eurocentrism and Afrocentric approaches in literary studies; global perspectives in literary theory and criticism; genres and insights into cultural and literary production in the context of Africa and the Diaspora; guided close reading.
The course proceeds through lecture, group discussions, students' presentations and close readings of literary texts.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation in group discussions and exercises during the course and preparatory reading; group presentation of a research article with PPT; written summary of a research article (ca. 2 pages) and written essay on a literary text (4-5 pages) by 31 July 2023.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Regular attendance and participation in group discussions; all three assignments (group presentation, written summary and essay) must be completed; much of the course reading is in English, teaching language is German. Knowledge of German and English is required.
Written assignments count for 70%, active participation during the semester for 30% of the grade.
