Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture offers a thorough introduction to the theoretical and methodological foundations of Islamic theological studies. It is designed to provide students with a sound methodological knowledge that enables them to analyze and critically evaluate scientific texts in the context of Islamic theology. The subject is interdisciplinary and faith-oriented, with a particular focus on the research and interpretation of the diverse internal Islamic doctrines and currents. By engaging with historical and current discourses, students should be able to reflect on these theories and methods in a scholarly manner and transfer them to current contexts.
Aims of the lecture
The lecture aims to teach students basic methodological skills that enable them to analyze, interpret and critically evaluate specialized texts. A particular focus is on the introduction to the scientific theories, techniques and methods that are applied in Islamic theological studies. This involves a critical reflection on the Islamic theological tradition as well as the analysis and reconstruction of the methods and theories of the individual disciplines. This enables students to transfer and update the methods and teachings in contemporary contexts.
Contents of the lecture
Methodological Foundations of Islamic Theological Studies: A central aspect of this lecture is the methodological approach to Muslim sources. The first part of the lecture provides a comprehensive introduction to the central theories and methods of Islamic theological studies. Basic information on the subject's primary sources, which are essential for further study, is provided. In addition, modern resources such as digital sources, artificial intelligence, special software and online resources are presented. Students learn how to use these tools properly and how they can be effectively used in scientific research and teaching.
Epistemological concepts and disciplines: The lecture covers the fundamental epistemological concepts and introduces the essential theories and methods of the various disciplines of Islamic theology. An important focus is on the presentation and critical analysis of the most important sources of Islamic theology as well as the use and evaluation of scientific tools.
Comparative perspective: Another focus is on the comparative analysis of Islamic theological studies in the context of other academic disciplines that view Islam from an external perspective. Students should be able to identify and discuss the specific methodological and theoretical characteristics of Islamic theological studies.
