Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Muslim community work is usually inseparable from various forms of informal, but also increasingly formalized, pastoral counseling. The concrete situations of need result on the one hand from specific needs within Muslim communities, but are also closely connected to the expectations of multipliers within existing religious structures.
In this module the field of such counseling situations will be reflected scientifically. The distinction between pastoral care, psychologically based counseling and psychotherapeutic intervention plays an important role, with special emphasis on the distinctions between pastoral care, theology and psychology or psychotherapy.
On the basis of essential historical developments, the relationship between scientifically based psychotherapy and theological thinking will be located. The intellectual-historical development of pastoral care and its adaptation in Islamic community work will be examined comprehensibly and with regard to its relevance for counseling activities in Muslim societies on the basis of the relevant literature.
In addition, the significance of supervision and introspection for pastoral care practice will be made transparent, particularly with regard to psychodynamic processes - especially transference and counter-transference - using concrete examples.

Students are expected to prepare individual aspects in this subject area through active participation, presentations and scientific papers and to present them independently within the framework of the seminar.
