Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar will study how architectural spaces are conceived in relation to the religious context and in function of ritual requirements, comparing and analyzing architectural typologies in Confucian, Daoist and Buddhist environment.

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance and participation: 30%; oral presentation: 30%; written paper: 40%
Students are expected to attend the seminar regularly, to participate in class discussion, to read the basic literature and the readings on specific topics suggested in classes. More than 3 unjustified absences will be evaluated as negative; attendance to the introductory lectures is highly recommended. The oral presentation and the written paper are compulsory for final marks.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To make students become familiar with different types, styles and functions of religious buildings in Chinese architecture; to make them to understand how the space is designed in relation to the historical and religious context and to the different ritual needs; to gain instruments for research on the topic; to recognise and know major architectural religious monuments of China.

Examination topics

There will be two academic hours classes every two weeks.
The seminar will be divided in two phases:
In the first phase introductory lectures will provide students with backgrounds in Chinese architecture, with special focus on religious architecture, typology of buildings within Buddhist, Daoist and Confucian ritual contexts.
In the second phase students will give oral presentations choosing among a list of suggested topics.
Possible topics could be research of a specific building, monument, or archaeological site; comparison of two monuments from different religious contexts, or representations of religious architectures in Chinese art (painting, sculpture).
Each presentation will last ca. 20 minutes followed by 15 minutes class discussion. Students will then develop the content of the presentation into a written research paper of ca. 10 pages of lenght, which will be evaluated for final grading.
The list of topics and the relevant literature will be given during the seminar according to the selected interests or specific requirements.
