Aims, contents and method of the course

This course covers the following sub-topics:
What is Shamanism? Definition, origins. Shamanism of the Altai region and Siberia. Mircea Eliade’s seminal book. Korean musok. Common elements of Korean and Siberian shamanism. The interaction of Buddhism and Shamanism in Korea.
Korean shamans: Types; gods and spirits; rituals (gut) and their sponsors.
The ideology of gut. Variety, types and components of Korean shaman rituals. Color symbolism. Ritual food. Accompanying music, dance and drama. Costumes and accessories.
Influence of shamanism on Korean traditional art and culture: Music and dance, drama, paintings, folk crafts, folk games.
Korean shamanism today: The role of shamanism in Korean society. Modern shamans. Shamanism in contemporary art.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Passed exam.
