Aims, contents and method of the course
This course focuses on the process of identity building of Overseas Chinese in Austria and its impact on their self-consciousness and behaviour patterns. Which are the components of individual and group identities? Which external parameters have an infulence on this process? How do Overseas Chinese design their own identity in view of a variety of identities to chose?
Assessment and permitted materials
presentations, homework, reading assignments and final essay.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The above questions are to be investigated using examples in order to sharpen the understanding of Overseas Chinese as actors within Austrian society and beyond.
Examination topics
discussion based on students' presentations, reading and analysing of pivotal texts.
Reading list
Literatur, die sowohl an soziologische Ansätze und Migrationstheorie als auch an die "Overseas Chinese Studies" heranführen soll, wird in den ersten Sitzungen vorgestellt. Ein Handapparat befindet sich in der Bibliothek OAW/Sinologie.
