Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Contents
The primary objective of this course is to support students in preparing their term paper, which constitutes a central component of the accompanying Seminar on Economic Systems in East Asia. The course is structured into six consecutive steps. It begins with a guided reading and discussion of selected chapters from a book on academic writing, followed by systematic work on the five essential components of any research project:
1. Definition of topic/title and formulation of the research question
2. Establishing the relevance of the research question
3. Structuring the literature review
4. Conducting the literature review
5. Developing the analytical framework
Each stage of the course is complemented by written assignments and supported by an AI-based tool specifically developed in cooperation with EcoS students to facilitate the research and writing process.
By the end of the course, students will have completed the theoretical part of their term paper and will be able to devote the remaining time before the deadline to finalizing their paper for the seminar.
Registration for this Exercise Course is a prerequisite for participation in the Seminar on Economic Systems in East Asia, as the seminar presupposes the successful preparation of the term paper within the framework of this course.

Assessment and permitted materials

Workload
To successfully complete this course, you are expected to engage in extensive reading and critical reflection. It is essential that you identify the topic of your term paper at an early stage and work on it continuously throughout the semester.
In total, you will be required to submit six written assignments:
1. A report on the first 14 chapters of Kate Turabian’s book on academic writing
2. A written proposal for topic/title and research question
3. A table outlining the arguments for the relevance of your research question(s)
4. A proposed structure for the literature review
5. The literature review itself
6. The analytical framework
Detailed instructions for each assignment will be provided via Moodle and supplemented by recorded lectures available on YouTube.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Assessment
Students are required to complete five graded assignments, each of which builds on the previous one. Details on all assignments, including due dates and formal requirements, will be provided via Moodle.
1. Report on the first 14 chapters of Kate Turabian’s book on academic writing (10%)
2. Proposal for topic/title and research question (10%)
3. Table outlining the arguments for the relevance of the research question(s) (20%)
4. Proposed structure of the literature review (20%)
5. Literature review and analytical framework (40%)
Since these assignments are closely interrelated, no late submissions will be accepted. Failure to submit an assignment on time will result in a grade of “5” for that assignment.

Attendance
This course has a strong interactive component and will be conducted in presence. Regular attendance is therefore essential to achieve the didactic objectives of the course. Attendance of at least 50% of all in-class sessions is the minimum requirement for passing.

Registration
Registration for this course is carried out via the electronic registration system of the University of Vienna. Once registered and having participated in at least one session, students are considered legally enrolled for examination, which means that a grade will be awarded. De-registration is possible only within the period specified by the central teaching administration of the University of Vienna. Students who withdraw from the course after this deadline will still be assigned a grade.
