Aims, contents and method of the course
The events of 1976 (the Tian'anmen protests in April, Maoist polititians coming to power, the second purge of Deng Xiaoping; finally Mao's death and the downfall of the so-called Gang of Four) prepared the ground for comprehensive economic and social reforms and China's gradual opening towards the (Western) world.
Assessment and permitted materials
Credits will be attributed on the basis of the oral presentation within the group (powerpoint), the individual written papers (10.000 characters + list of consulted literature), regular presence (compulsory!) and active participation (including small home-works). The main criteria for the attribution of credits will be to which extend the student is capable to analyze the main aspects of the topic and to present them in a systematic and scientific way.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Acquiring basic knowledge of political developments in China during the second half of the 1970s. Students shll also acquaint themselves with relevant literature and different historical views on this era.
Examination topics
After a general introduction into the topic, the students prepare (in small groups) presentations of specific aspects and (individually) written papers.
