Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this lecture series is to provide sound knowledge of Japan’s politics and economics, as well as a basic understanding of contemporary history, enabling students to independently assess current developments in Japan and beyond. The lecture series also intends to nurture interest in this topic and to encourage self-study to deepen knowledge.

Assessment and permitted materials

Grading is based on a written final exam (in the form of a multiple-choice test).

The utilization of resources at the exam is not permitted with the exception of foreign language dictionaries which may be used following prior approval by the lecturer.

Examinations take place four times (at the end of the semester and in the course of the winter semester). Examination dates will be announced on u:space, u:find and moodle.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The lecture is open to students of all faculties (registration is not required to attend the lecture series) and can be credited as “Erweiterungscurriculum (EC)”.

The teaching language is German. (Japanese language skills are not required).

Grading is based on a multiple-choice exam: a score of over 50% is required to pass the lecture with a positive grade.

Examination topics

Teaching method: typical lecture series (with PowerPoint slides and partly with multimedia elements). Accompanying information and lecture material can be found on the e-learning platform (moodle). The lecture series is held in German language; several articles of the reading list are in English.

The final grade is based on a written exam which covers the contents of the lectures and resources on the e-learning platform.

Reading list

Resources accompanying the lecture series and relevant for exam preparation can be found on the e-learning platform (moodle). Registration via moodle is required to access these contents.
Relevant books are found in the reserve shelf of the East Asian Studies Library.
