Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this lecture series is to provide sound knowledge of Japan’s politics and economics, as well as a basic understanding of contemporary history, enabling students to independently assess current developments in Japan and beyond. The lecture series intends to nurture interest so as to encourage self-study to further deepen knowledge.

Assessment and permitted materials

Grading is based on a final exam (in the form of a multiple-choice test (in German language)).

The utilization of resources at the exam is not permitted (with the exception of foreign language dictionaries which may be used in exceptional cases and following prior approval by the lecturer).

The four exam dates (at the end of the semester and in the course of the following winter semester) are announced on u:space, u:find and moodle.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The lecture is open to students of all faculties. Registration is not required to attend the lecture series. The lecture can be credited as “Erweiterungscurriculum (EC)”.

The teaching language is German. Japanese language skills are not required.

Grading is based on a multiple-choice exam. A score of over 50% is required to pass with a positive grade. (Further details concerning the exam are provided on the moodle platform.)

Examination topics

Teaching method: typical lecture series (with PowerPoint slides and partly with multimedia elements). Accompanying information and lecture material can be found on the e-learning platform (moodle). The lecture series is held in German language; several articles of the reading list are in English.

The final grade is based on a written exam which covers the contents of the lectures and resources on the e-learning platform.

Reading list

Registration on the e-learning platform (moodle) is required for access to accompanying reading matter and other relevant information for the exam. In addition, a selection of books is kept in the lecture-specific reserve shelf of the East Asia Library of the University of Vienna and reserved for use on site.
