Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The recent development of cultural globalization has initiated the merging of media consumption within geocultural regions, connecting people through consumption behavior. In East Asia, Japanese trendy television drama initiated this circulation and Korean culture expanded suddenly and rapidly throughout East Asia. As a center of media consumption in East Asia, contemporary Taiwan is filled with cultural innovations from Japan and Korea. Although these two different cultures have attracted Taiwanese consumers, the backgrounds of these phenomena are very different. Japan-mania was initiated by ardent consumers in receiving countries, but the Korean wave has mainly been promoted by the Korean state in order to boost its culture industry. In discussing East Asian popular culture, these two influences are often considered the most significant phenomena; however, this course aims not only to explore how these products are sold, but also to understand the patterns of consumption in a receiving country.
Assessment and permitted materials
Students will be graded 30% on participation and attendance, 30% on presentation, and 40% on the final paper.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
This course aims at improving the student's understanding of Taiwanese popular culture, as well as its role in influencing the growth of East Asian popular culture more generally. This course will provide a history of the Taiwanese media, in particular how Taiwan has received East Asian popular culture and fostered transnational cultural consumption. It aims to understand how and why Japan-mania and the Korea Wave have penetrated the Taiwanese cultural landscape and attracted multitudes of local fans.
