Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will provide an overview of the features and structure of the Japanese language and writing system. Reading and writing of the hiragana and katakana syllabaries will also be covered. It is designed to prepare students for Japanische Grammatik I [Japanese Grammar I] and Kommunikation auf Japanisch [Japanese Communication] later in the semester.

PREREQUISITES:
* proficiency in English (should obviously be comfortable with the idea of studying a foreigen language in English, C1 strongly recommended)
* advance registration
* textbook (see below)

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance is mandatory. No-shows for the first unit will have their registration revoked immediately and missing more than 1 of the 5 remaining units results in a faiing grade. Tardiness may be counted as absence at the discretion of the lecturer.
You should budget about 20 hours per week of additional study time.
There will be a written test on the last day, which will make up most of the mark. Students who miss or fail this test will be given one opportunity to make up for it. The rest will depend on active participation in class and homework. Details will be announced in the first unit.
There is a strict zero tolerance policy on cheating and plagiarism.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

At the end of this course students should
* be able to read and write hiragana and katakana with some fluency;
* know a few basic Japanese words, phrases and short dialogues;
* have some familiarity with studying kanji (and have some 30-50 under their belt already).
