Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Colonisation manifests in various aspects of daily life, extending beyond the apparent institutional oppressions and resource exploitations. However, the dissolution of such systems of control does not necessarily accompany the departure of the colonising powers. The seminar aims to explore the concepts of colonialism and oppression, and the correspondances on the civilian level as presented in cultural productions, with a particular focus on the nuanced and particular post-colonial situations of Hong Kong and Taiwan – former colonies of the British and the Japanese respectively. The seminar features case studies drawn from a range of cultural productions, including architectural design, museums, fashion trends, culinary culture, films, comedies, literature, advertisements to comic books. The objective of this seminar is achieved by means of a comprehensive examination of the relevant literature and all kinds of textual materials (films, documentaries, archival materials, comic books, newspaper clippings and comedy shows etc.) with topics revolving around the concept and case studies.
To succeed in the course, students are required to prepare for active class discussions, presentations and a final term paper. To pass the course as a whole, students have to pass each of the following items as listed below. That means that failing the presentations or the class participation part may not be compensated by even a perfect final paper.

Assessment and permitted materials

1. Two presentations in class with submission of presentation slides within ten days after the presentation (50%) (Guidelines please refer to Moodle resources)
2. Essay submission (30%)
3. Active participation in class (20%) (with strictly not more than two times of absence)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Please note, students are required to fulfill all the three items of assessment in order to pass the seminar. That means, a minimum pass in each item is a prerequisite to pass the overall course. Failing one of the items may not be compensated by even a perfect final paper or flawless presentation.
