Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
- Compulsory, active participation in the first and last course unit
- Participation in at least six lectures, preparation for the topic and the lecturer, active participation in the subsequent discussions / Q&A sessions and
- Submission of a preparatory report on the lecturer, the topic of the lecture and questions for the subsequent discussion. This
preparation protocol must be handed in for each lecture on the day before the respective lecture.
(40% of the grade: Short preparatory report and active participation during the lectures, questions during discussion )
- Five short essays/reviews on the lectures or on further questions in connection with the lectures - will be discussed in the first course unit.
(60% of the grade)
- Participation in at least six lectures, preparation for the topic and the lecturer, active participation in the subsequent discussions / Q&A sessions and
- Submission of a preparatory report on the lecturer, the topic of the lecture and questions for the subsequent discussion. This

as well as to all master's degree students as an Individual Specialization (M8).The course serves as an accompanying course to the guest lectures taking place at the Institute / Department of Sinology during the semester. Students will probably be offered a total of around seven lectures, which usually take place on Wednesdays at 6:30 pm -8:00pm and Thursdays at 4:45 pm -6:15 pm and 6:30 pm -8:00 pm (with exceptions).
Attendance at six of these guest lectures is compulsory.Some lectures are already fixed, further exact dates and times as well as titles/topics of the lectures will be announced as soon as possible - i.e. when the lectures are finalized.
Attendance at the course units at the beginning and end of the semester is compulsory.
Students will be assessed on their active participation (especially in the discussions / Q&A sessions that follow the respective lectures) as well as on the submission of a preparatory report on the lecturer, the topic of the lecture and questions for the subsequent discussion. A further requirement are five short essays/reviews, which the students are to write retrospectively on questions and topics from the six lectures they attended. The exact modalities will be discussed and explained in the course of the first course unit.Objectives:
- Learning to receive and analyze scientific lectures / topics
- Get to know different research areas and approaches in the Department of Sinology
- Structured writing and critical preparation of what has been learnt in written form (essays/reviews)
- Analytical approach to topics, questions, methodology, theories and results of the selected lectures
