Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In the lecture on Politics and Law in China, the students acquire basic knowledge of the political system, bureaucracy, and law in China. They are introduced to the territorial and organizational structure of the Chinese one-party state and gain insights into mechanisms of political decision-making, the fundamentals of political communication, structures and processes of the administrative system, and selected policy areas and their implementation. Relationships between individuals, civil society organizations, and the state are also part of the lecture. They will be introduced to the constantly changing connection between law, ideology, and politics, as well as the use of law as a means of societal resistance. At the end of the course, students will be able to name the main organizations and institutions of the Chinese one-party state and their functions and have developed a basic understanding of political processes, the political logic of the application of law, and strategies and results of societal resistance

IMPORTANT: The rules of good scientific practice apply. According to the valid regulations of the University of Vienna, the submitted examination can be subjected to a plagiarism check for control purposes (turnitin). Within the assessment period of four weeks, oral inquiries can also be made regarding the subject matter of the examination (plausibility check). According to the Austrian University Act, "[e]plagiarism [...] exists in any case if text passages, theories, hypotheses, findings or data are taken over and passed off as one's own without acknowledging the source or the author" (§ 51 Abs 2 Z 31 UG 2002, see also link of the Studienpräses to the definition of plagiarism:
https://studienpraeses.univie.ac.at/infos-zum-studienrecht/wissenschaftliche-arbeiten/plagiat/).
It is therefore forbidden, when using additional aids (e.g. additional texts), to include foreign content unchanged (copy-paste) in one's own examination without marking the copied passage and indicating the source.

Reading list

Note: only the content presented on the slides and audio recordings is relevant for the exam. Literature added in the course of the VL should make it easier for you to better understand this content. Ideally, you should read selectively, i.e. with regard to phenomena and events that are presented on the slides but are not comprehensible to you. Together with the tutorial and the possibility to ask questions in the VL, this should prepare you optimally for further studies (and of course the exam).

So it is by no means a matter of memorizing the extensive material, but of reading selectively, distinguishing the important from the unimportant, asking questions, deepening your understanding, and thinking in depth about the connections between the many factors we will be talking about in the coming weeks.
