Aims, contents and method of the course
A. Course descriptionThis course surveys the main topics of politics and governance in the People’s Republic of China. The course is roughly divided into two parts. Part I introduces the key components of the political system, including the power structure, leadership and succession, political institutions, political mobilization, ideology and political participation. Part II examines main issues related to governance, regulation and associated social problems. At the end of the course, students are expected to obtain a good understanding of the foundation of the PRC political system and its governmental structure.The course will be conducted in English.Proficiency of Chinese is not required.
Assessment and permitted materials
B. Course requirements and grading1. Class preparation, attendance and participation account for 30% of the final grade. Students are expected to read all the assigned reading materials before class.
2. The exam has two components: a (take-home) 10-page research paper and a closed (in-class) written exam. The deadline for the submission of the research paper is February 10, 2020. The research paper shall address a pre-approved research question and present a causal analysis with evidentiary support. The written exam will take place on January 27, 2020. You will be required to answer a number of essay questions at class. The written exam is a closed exam. Consultation with any reference materials either in print or electronic forms is prohibited. There will be no make-up exam.
