Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this course is to practice and perfect several skills relevant for studying Korean studies. These include reading and summarizing texts thematically appropriate to the Seminar I (Group 1) which needs to be attended together. In addition, presentation techniques will be practiced and joint discussion and moderation of these discussions will be attempted.
The exact outline of the course depends on the number of participants. Depending on the size of the group, the participants will select a text from the works provided on Moodle and present it in (group) presentations. On the basis of this, a teaching unit with moderated discussion is to be designed in each lesson.
Non-presenting participants are asked to read the texts provided on Moodle in advance in order to be able to contribute to the discussions. For this purpose, approx. 1-2 page (A4) will be handed in beforehand as a summary of one's own thoughts on the text.
At the end of the semester, the (group) presentation will be handed in in written form.

Anticipated content of texts covered in class: cultural history of North Korea, literature of North Korea, North Korea in its geographic and cultural context, perceptions of North Korea (from an external perspective).

Assessment and permitted materials

The presentations, homework exercises and the short written paper at the end of the semester mentioned in advance will be used as performance assessment. Details will be given in class. Any electronic help is not necessary for this and are therefore not allowed.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance is mandatory (also online), students may be absent a maximum of two times without official excuse. However, students are requested to send a notification by e-mail in advance in order to allow for adequate class planning. The first attendance of a course immanent to an examination is considered to be the start of the examination, thus the course will also be graded! If a dropout occurs during the month of October with the corresponding deregistration, grading will not be done. Students who are absent from the first lesson without an excuse will automatically be deregistered and therefore not graded.

Holding a presentation is mandatory. Students who are absent from their own presentation must provide an equivalent substitute work, otherwise the course cannot be assessed positively. Handing in a final paper is also mandatory.

Since most of the texts are English-language works, a good reading knowledge of English is required.

Assessment Measure:
Discussion/homework (20%)
Presentation (40%)
Final paper (40%)
All partial performances must be completed!

A total of 60 points is required for a positive evaluation of the course.
1 (sehr gut) 100-91 Points
2 (gut) 90-81 Points
3 (befriedigend) 80-71 Points
4 (genügend) 70-60 Points
5 (nicht genügend) 59-0 Points

Examination topics

There is no exam. The works announced above serve as the basis for assessment.
