Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this module, students learn about the modern and contemporary history of China from a cultural perspective. The module covers intellectual movements, literary trends, and cultural developments in China since the late-imperial period. Students are introduced to the major cultural events, personalities, and phenomena that have transformed Chinese society during its transition from the premodern to the modern era. Students learn to identify elements of cultural continuity and change across different epochs, ideologies, and political systems up to the twenty-first century. Furthermore, they learn to evaluate the influence of foreign cultures on the development of modern China. Basic knowledge about the culture and history of imperial China is also introduced to highlight their impact on modern historical developments and continued significance in contemporary culture. After completing the module, students will have developed an understanding of the essential role of culture in shaping historical processes and its importance for China’s modern nation-building project and contemporary rise as a global power.
