Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar is an important step in guiding the preparation of an MA thesis in East Asian Economy and Society. It should thus be attended in the third or fourth semester of the MA program.
In the first part of the seminar, we will have an intense discussion of principal matters regarding the writing of academic papers and theses. This will, hopefully, constitute the structured recapitulation of existing knowledge. In the second part, we will apply these skills and approaches to the participants´ specific research projects. In particular, we will focus on finding an appropriate topic, research question, and methodology for the thesis. The seminar concludes with the preparation of a first outline and thus leads right into the preparation of the actual MA thesis.

Assessment and permitted materials

In the second part, students are required to develop a research topic, a research question/hypothesis, and a draft outline of their research project including the planned theoretical approach and methodology. Each student has to present his/her paper in class and also comment on the paper of a colleague. The due dates are specified in a separate document.

Examination topics

In the first part, this seminar is text-based. Accordingly, in preparation of each unit, students will be asked to read, summarize and grade MA theses that have already been approved. This will create a foundation for active discussion during the seminar. Expect reading about 100 pages or more per week.
