Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar is an important step in guiding the preparation of an MA or PhD thesis in East Asian Economy and Society (EcoS). It should thus only be attended in the third or fourth semester of the MA program, or at the beginning of the PhD program. You should also have a topic for your thesis in mind.
In the first part of the seminar, we will have an intense discussion of principal matters re-garding the writing of academic papers and theses. This will not be new to you and thus has the function of a structured recapitulation of existing knowledge. Most importantly, we will repeat the key features of a State of the Art/Literature Review and of the Analytical Frame-work.
In the second part, we will apply these skills and approaches by discussing and grading pre-viously written EcoS MA theses.
In the third part, students will prepare and present a first State of the Art on their own top-ics. The seminar thus leads right into the preparation of the actual thesis.
For a Covid-19 related update, see "Prüfungsstoff" below.

Assessment and permitted materials

Turabian essay: In the first part, students will be asked to read the first chapters of a book on academic writing, a total of about 140 pages. After this, students will write an essay (2,500 words) in which they reflect on the contents of what they have read in relation to their own work and research projects. Please note that this will not be a summary, but rather a critical discussion. The essay must be submitted electronically 24 hours before class via Moodle.
MA thesis grading exercise: In the second part, students will read and evaluate several actu-al MA theses that have been written as part of the EcoS program. Each thesis has to be grad-ed numerically and verbally according to the EcoS standard (for details including a template see Moodle). The reports have to be submitted electronically 24 hours before class via Moo-dle. During class, students will be asked to explain their evaluation. Make sure to use only the provided forms, without modifying them.
Topic and research question: Beginning from the first unit of the seminar, students are re-quired to think about a research topic, a research question, and the theoretical background of their MA project. The topic and research question must be submitted via Moodle 24 hours before class (one sentence each, as a PDF).
State of the Art: A profound and structured discussion of at least 20 relevant sources on the narrow topic of the thesis must be submitted electronically 24 hours before class. Please note that you should start searching and reading early, as soon as you have decided on your topic and RQ.
Late submission: A delay in submission of up to 1 week will result in downgrading by one full grade. A delay in submission of up to 2 weeks will result in downgrading by two full grades, and so forth.
To adjust the workload, we will occasionally skip single units and allot this time to the prepa-ration of the assignments. For details see the separate schedule.
Participation: Students’ participation in discussion is an integral part of this course. Regular participation is thus mandatory. The following rules apply: The grade for attendance is “1” in the case of up to two absences. If you are absent for up to 3 times, the grade will be “2”. If you are absent for up to 4 times, the grade will “3”, and so forth.
For a Covid-19 related update, see "Prüfungsstoff" below.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The final grade for the course will be calculated as follows:
Essay Turabian: 20%
Evaluation of MA Thesis 1: 10%
Evaluation of MA Thesis 2: 10%
Research topic, research question: 10%
Literature Review: 40%
Attendance: 10%
• The Literature Review counts as a minimal requirement (“Mindestanforderung”) and must thus be passed in order to pass the whole course.
• This seminar is meant for those students who have passed the language courses and most seminars and are now seriously preparing for the MA thesis. This course is not recommended for students in the first and second semester.
For a Covid-19 related update, see "Prüfungsstoff" below.

Examination topics

CORONA UPDATE
(1) We will NOT hold any Jitsi or other video conference meetings. The meeting scheduled for March 24 has been cancelled.
• Aside from the low reliability and the fact that this would be only an imperfect replication of an actual classroom discussion, I am worried that it might work for 80 or 90% of you, but not for everybody. However, I will not leave a single one of you behind. We need a solution that works for all of you, without exception.
(2) Submit your assignments as originally planned.
• This task is mandatory. It concerns the 2 grading exercises, as well as topic+research question, and State of the Art.
• You would have had to prepare these presentations and to present them anyway, so this is no change from the original workload. The only difference is that you will not hold the presentations live in the classroom, but rather record them.
• I have posted a quick guide on how to use Microsoft Powerpoint to record your presentations and upload them on Moodle (see “Administration”, and “How to record your PPT presentations”).
• Please remember that Microsoft Office is available for free to all regular students at the University of Vienna.
(4) Use the comment function in the Moodle forum to respond to the team presentations.
• This task is optional. You are more than welcome to comment, but you will not have to. The same applies to me (although I am very likely to use the option). In any case, I will provide individual feedback to you on your respective performance and submissions.
